Unlimited Community
Co-living
OVERVIEW
Housing and social problems are now plaguing young people in big cities.
The "Unlimited Communities" research project focuses on the concept of "Co-Living" and "Interests and Friendship" to explore how to realize the social function of long-term rental apartments. The idea of "collective participation of target tenants in space design" was proposed.
Since the design phase of the project was during a serious Covid period, we invited 30 potential future residents of the community online to explore the real living and social needs of young people nowadays.
We hope to help young people establish and develop social relationships and find a sense of collective belonging through the shared community, and make full use of the space resources in the common areas of the long-term rental apartments so that the long-term rental apartments can play a greater social value.

BACKGROUND
Housing and social problems are now plaguing young people in big cities.
According to the demographic census in 2006 and 2016, the resident population, total dwellings, and average household size in Northcote all have considerable increases, which means collaborative housing could be the new future living style.

SITE ANALYSIS
SITE LOCATION
This site is at the corner of High Street and Walker Street in Northcote, within the city of Darebin. To the south, the original site is bounded by Merri Creek linear reserve.

MICRO CONDITION
According to the sun path diagram, in summer mid-day, because the sun directly goes into the buildings from the top, there is not much shadow to surrounding vegetation, therefor the tree on the south could absorb the heat and bring wind to the site

NATURAL TOPOGRAPHY
The surface drainage terrain is lowering towards the creek, which could be an opportunity for our residents to have more view of the green vegetation and also an opportunity for onsite stormwater collection.

CIRCULATION
Existing pedestrian pathways through the site link the street to building and car parking.
Footpath on both sides of walker street and a shared path continuing along the high street to the bridge and railway. There are also cycling paths along the high street and beside the Merri creek
Two entry points are shared with vehicles, one-off walker street, and one-off high street.

FINAL DESIGN
DESIGN INTENT
The unlimited community is committed to creating a rich life experience space for young groups, where you can
work, have meetings, can exhibit sales, Airbnb, and also can be a shared space for cooking and gathering.
The unlimited community creates flexibility through variable walls to meet the needs of residents for future development.
There are many different types of floor plans to choose from to suit different groups. While satisfying privacy, people are encouraged to get out of the room, out of the home, and join the shared space to enrich life.
Residents are encouraged to reorganize the space, break boundaries to form an unlimited community and allow users to stimulate imagination and creativity in the open space experience.
